The benefits of bursting out of your comfort zone

You convince yourself you go to a particular networking group because you really like it. You say that working in a certain industry, for a certain fee, or in a certain way is what you need to settle for at the moment.

You blame others – your education, kids, money, and health issues – for the work situation in which you find yourself.

In all these cases, the problem is you.  And your problem is fear.

Are you scared to imagine a better future? Are you scared of what happens if you break out of your comfort zone? Are you scared that you might – gasp! – fail?

Business benefits of bursting out of your comfort zone

If this sounds like you, here are some business benefits of bursting out of your comfort zone.

You’ll raise your confidence

Whether it’s a long-term problem or momentary issue, lack of confidence is key to your current situation.  So, if you feel stuck in a rut, pick one tiny thing you can do to break out of it.

Here are some examples:

  • Make a call rather than sending an email

  • Go to a work event for 10 minutes that you would usually avoid

  • Challenge yourself to be assertive once during the day if you would ordinarily not be so

Just do something – tiny to start with– and build on it a little every week.  The more you break out of your comfort zone, the more comfortable you will be doing it again.

You’ll build the life you want to lead

We love this quote by Thomas Jefferson - "I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it."

The more you say “yes” to things – push yourself, feel momentary discomfort - the greater the rewards.

You’ll feel more connected to others

If you don’t know what you want, or pretend to be satisfied with what you’ve got – you have no incentive to change.

But once you’ve identified what you want to change in order to get the life you want to lead, it’s easy to find people and resources that can help.

If you put the word out that you need help with a certain something, or admit that you are nervous about networking or pubic speaking, you’ll find many other people who feel the same way.  Then, together, you can investigate ways of dealing with it and improving together.
